Apple says iPhone 4 reception issue fix coming soon

Friday, 2 July 2010

Apple has responded to the claims that the iPhone 4 has reception problems when being held.

A letter posted online by Apple which says that they were surprised to hear about the problems and immediately began investigating them. It found that the solution was both simple and surprising.

First of all Apple says that almost all mobile phones when held in certain ways will see a drop in reception. Though some users reported that the iPhone 4 had a reception drop which was far more than usual.

Apple goes on to say that upon investigation of the problem, it was stunned to find that the way it calculates how many bars to display the signal strength is wrong. Which would mistakenly show two more bars than it should, for example in a weak area, it would show four bars instead of two bars. Apple has said that users who experienced a big drop in bars is because the bars were false representation of the actual signal strength.

To fix the problem, Apple has said it is adopting AT&T's recent recommendation for calculating how many bars to display for signal strength.

Apple will be releasing a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected calculation. The update will be available for the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4.
