Holding out for a hero? Well HTC can now offer you one... literally; the Hero is their new Android smartphone, and it’s possibly the closest they’ve come yet to a contender for the market leader; the iPhone.

It certainly has a style uniquely its own, with a prominent “jaw-line” design, similar to that of the handset of a house phone. In all fairness, it isn’t that prominent, but it’s a feature you’ll either love or hate. As for the actual features, it’s quite similar in layout to previous HTCs, the touchscreen interface is supplemented by additional buttons that take you to the home menu, or make and receive calls, and the widgets on the interface are novel and fun to use as well. It has an ample screen too with a decent resolution of 480x320 pixels. It has improved touch sensitivity as well, to add to its usability.

There is 512mb of built-in memory, with the option of adding up to 16gb of memory with an microSD card. It’s a pretty responsive phone on the whole too, and of course features HSDPA for high speed uploading and downloading, as well as GPS. The 5 megapixel camera has autofocus, but no flash, meaning the camera is once again somewhat disappointing.

This is arguably HTCs best phone to date, and definitely the closest they’ve come to Apple’s hold on the market, and although it’ll take a little getting used to, it is well worth your consideration.

Summary:

  • Good Points: It has a nice layout, and has good amounts of available memory.
  • Bad Points: The lack of flash on the camera hinders its usability somewhat, and that’s a shame.
  • Others to Consider: Apple iPhone, BlackBerry 9500 Storm.
  • Free on Contract with: Orange & Vodafone.
